40 Days of Service Day 12

Morning Prayer: Lord, how can I serve you today?

Scripture: Luke 17:7-10

“Suppose one of you had a servant…” When my wife was young, she always dreamed that when she grew up she was going to have a maid. It would be awesome to imagine that you had somebody to wait on your every need. Just like the rich and famous, you have a chef to cook, a maid to clean, and a gardener to work the landscape. The master has an expectation and the servant has a job.

Jesus is talking to his disciples. He asks them to imagine they had a servant. The servant has worked hard all day long. The servant is tired and hungry. What command will you give your servant? Will you allow your servant to put his needs before your needs? Jesus gave this illustration to show his disciples that it is a servant’s duty to obey his master. Working hard does not earn the servant a spot at the master’s table. As God’s servants, we must not look to our own needs and desires, but rather to the needs and desires of God. Being a servant of God does not earn us a spot at the table. “We are unworthy servants…”
