Morning Prayer: Lord, how can I serve you today?

Scripture: Deuteronomy 10:1-13

Moses is recounting a time when he spent forty days and forty nights on Mount Sinai, pleading with God to be merciful to His children Israel. They had made a golden calf and Moses broke the stone tablets on which God inscribed the Ten Commandments. God listened to Moses and wrote His laws on two new tablets. I was encouraged to read verse 10 and hear Moses say, “It was not God’s desire to destroy you.” God’s desire is for us to make it to the end of our journey on earth and into the promised land.

Much like Moses, we get to spend forty days alone with God. Today is the first day of that journey with God. What do you expect to get out of these next forty days? What do you want to talk to God about? What do you want God to do for you?

This is what God asks of you during the season of Lent. God wants you “to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and all your soul…” God wants you to take these forty days serious. These forty days are meant to be a time of repentance, culminating in the sacrifice that would bring us forgiveness.
